In a world that resembles the dark fantasy of the Wizardry series, magic is disappearing. The government issues a call for adventurers to venture into ancient ruins to find out what's happening. Unlike most mass-market MMOs, Wizardry Online features permadeath; if your character dies, they are gone forever (though there are shrines that can occasionally resurrect them). It's an attempt at adding depth to the game's gameplay, but it also makes it very difficult to keep going.

Players explore dangerous dungeons in turn-based combat, with internally-simulated dice rolls determining the outcome of each encounter. They collect loot, upgrade their characters' abilities, and fight monsters at a huge scale. Players can also interact with NPCs, collect quests, and solve puzzles. The game features five races and four classes. At the start of a new character's life, they are given a random number of points that they can assign to their attributes. The distribution of these points determines their class.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the way it is designed to be played with a group. This is essential for success in the dungeons, as it is nearly impossible to solo through them. Furthermore, the constant threat of permadeath can be very disheartening to dedicated players who have invested a lot of time into their characters.

Despite the lack of the polish and community of other MMOs, Wizardry Online is worth checking out for its unique style. Its austere fairy tale offers a good challenge and some interesting ideas, even if its execution is jagged at best.
